New Servers and Backend Changes

Posted on May 24th, 2008 by nik

The front-end webservers at Omnidrive have been through a lot recently, and we have had 2 hardware failures in the past 2 months. Over the last week, each of the web servers (website server, all the login servers) have been upgraded with new hardware as well as a new backend. There should be a noticable difference with login times, file downloads and basic user actions.

The new backend was rolled out in anticipation of the new Omnidrive web release, components of which will begin going live over the next few weeks. Coming up first will be the ability to link to your Google, S3 and/or other accounts, and it will build from there. User registration won’t be opened up again until we completely roll out the new version and until we have all existing users migrated.

I apologise for the lack of blog posts, but we had a broken blog for a few months that was only fixed in the past few days. The problem was caused when a Wordpress upgrade died part-way through, leaving the database partly upgraded to a new version and partly not - the only solution was to manually modify the database back to its previous state.

Website Server Back Up

Posted on January 13th, 2008 by nik
The main server that hosts this website (which is seperate from the application and storage servers that run Omnidrive) had a hard drive fail, went offline and was down for a period. We had a new server up within hours and we restored backups of the site, and it is up-and-running again. I am really sorry for the inconvenience to our users of not being able to access the main site, although the actual Omnidrive servers were not affected at all and you would not have had any problems accessing your accounts. We are creating a second instance of the website now so that we have a failover. The website has been up almost every minute since we launched, and is rather basic (Wordpress) . Update: The server is at a new IP address and the old DNS record had a high TTL, so it is taking some time to propagate. It should be all done by now, but it did result in some clients not being able to access the server for a while

Omnidrive New Release and High Load

Posted on December 14th, 2007 by nik

It has been a long time since we posted something to the blog here (as some have pointed out). We have been very busy working on the upcoming 1.0 release, which will see Omnidrive step out of beta with an all-new release. The gold release encompasses everything we have learnt from the beta period from our users and finally implements the vision that we initially set out - all your data, both web and non-web, aggregated and accessible from a single point. The new release will fully implement WebFS and will allow user to mount Gmail, Facebook, Flickr, FTP and many other storage endpoints and to make them accessible from a single point (and API). You will be able to drag and drop, share and publish all your data from the supported services from within the Omnidrive interface.

During the weekend, we will post some screenshots as well as a short screencast preview of this new release so our users can get an idea of what to expect. There is plenty more that we are keeping under wraps until the launch. If you have any feature suggestions (and we have received tons, a large part of the development has come from user feedback), please feel free to email us on feedback at omnidrive.com. Also, if you would like to integrate your own applications with WebFS and Omnidrive in time for the launch, shoot me an email (nik@). While we have been very quiet for a while now, we will be sporadically announcing certain new features and updates, but not to the extent that we previously have (we have many imitators ;)).

Meanwhile, we were featured in a CNN Money news and online piece about online data storage. Because of this, other recent coverage and increased user activity, our servers are currently experiencing a very high level of load (both bandwidth and storage). We are working on adding additional capacity, as some users have been affected for up to 24 hours, and we should be clear again within another 12 hours or so.

We haven’t anticipated the level of usage we are seeing today, especially as a service that is still in beta. Because of that we have been caught out with load issues a few times in the past couple of months, but we are working on having plenty of capacity available in time for the big release.

Update: No more reports of long load times or failed uploads and all user accounts and server are good. Thanks for your patience while we took care of things. If you are still experiencing a slow connection or a failed upload, email us on support at omnidrive.com and we will get back to you asap.

Dear Users,

Please be advised that we are currently experiencing some technical issues with one of our data centers which we believe may be the result of a denial-of-service attack. We are working on restoring all services within the next few hours and we apologize to those users who have been affected.

Those affected will experience difficulties of not being able to log into their Omnidrive account via Web Interface, Desktop Clients (Mac & Windows) and WebDAV (Pro users).

Once again we apologize for any inconvenience caused to users who have been affected.

We will keep you notified of any updates as they occur.
